Exporting Trello projects with comments and attachments
Check which task comments, files and archived records an export contains before retiring an old project workspace.
For Trello discussion and files, choose the route by what you need to keep. Board JSON includes only the 1,000 most recent actions, including comments; a Premium Workspace export is the route for all comments and can include raw attachments. Board CSV omits comments. Reconcile the exported discussion and files against the source before retiring access.
Define the record
List the projects in scope and what a later reader must find: task IDs, descriptions, decision-bearing comments, authors and dates where available, attachments, and links to files stored elsewhere. Include completed or archived work where it matters. Record an export cut-off and who may retrieve the material.
Keep a manifest for each project with its source location, route, export date, resulting file names and known omissions. Distinguish a downloaded attachment from a link that still depends on Trello or another service.
Choose the source route
Any Trello board member can export board JSON through the board menu’s Print, Export, and Share options. JSON is suited to technical use and includes the board’s 1,000 most recent actions, including comments; it is not a route for all comments.
With Trello Premium, each user in a Premium Workspace can export a board to CSV. CSV omits comments and normally includes only unarchived cards. To include archived cards, append .csv to the board URL; that CSV includes open and archived cards.
To export all comments, use Premium’s Export all boards within a Workspace option under Workspace Settings > Export. Workspace exports are available in CSV and JSON, but CSV omits comments, so retain the JSON for discussion. Only Workspace admins can create and download Workspace exports.
When creating a Workspace export, select Include raw attachments to include card attachments in their original formats inside a ZIP file. Without that option, the export links to attachments hosted on Trello.
ClickUp’s workspace task-data export is a CSV of tasks in selected Spaces, Folders and Lists, and the workspace export includes comments.
Trello JSON and CSV exports cannot be imported to recreate a board. Inbox cards cannot be exported; move them to a board first.

Reconcile what was saved
Compare required comments by card with the exported discussion, and check that each decision-bearing comment remains associated with its card. Check author and date context where present. A board JSON may contain only the 1,000 most recent actions, while board CSV has no comments; use the Premium Workspace JSON route when all comments are required.
For files, record the source attachment count and compare it with the ZIP file count. Match filenames and file sizes, then open each extracted file. For link-only Trello attachments, compare the links with the source and test each with authorised access.
For any gap requiring manual transfer, record the source task ID, destination, responsible person and completion check. Keep the source accessible until the agreed record can be found and used in the new platform or a controlled archive. A task count alone is not a completion test.
Reconciliation Process After Export

- Validate author and date contextConfirm metadata integrity for traceability
- Check attachment count and file integrityCompare ZIP file count with original, verify filenames and sizes, open each file
- Test external linksEnsure access to linked files with authorised credentials
- Document gaps and manual transfersRecord task ID, destination, responsible person, and completion check
